Surfboards and buckets of rope

I nearly got to post something sooner in April, but it turns out I missed the whole month! I met a hurdle of surfboard work upon my return from Sri Lanka during the first two weeks of the month. Below are a couple of shots I took while over there.

Cards on a restaurant table, there to bide time between tropical downpours.

Hikkaduwa

I returned to the town of Hikkaduwa on the south-west coast of the beautiful island in the Indian Ocean, my first time back there in 36 years. Photographs from both 1987 and 2023 can be reached by visiting Hikkaduwa: 1987 & 2023. I’ll get round to writing a little more soon, it was so good, engaging and interesting after decades away.

A brief stop at Hikkaduwa railway station.

I’m a novice when it comes to taking or editing video, but I did take a some footage and crudely produce a short Sri Lanka reel that can be seen on sleeplessink.blogspot.com

Maybe next Bulletin I’ll waffle more on how I found the town in 2023, but for now it’s a quick look at returning to Cornwall, especially at this time of year as the seasons change and everyone looks to start wearing T-shirts…or even shorts…please let it be so!

Coming in to land

Turning over London and Tower Bridge.

We landed safely at Heathrow, continued to Paddington and made it to platform 9 for the train heading west. It was packed, as full as it could be, people sat on every seat and on the floor in the isles throughout the length of the train – somehow they were missing 4 carriages from the necessary 9. Railway drama aside, we made it home to Cornwall.

The slick of sunscreen had barely washed off before getting back to my work with surfboards.

Straight back to it!

Although still cold, it is on the cusp of changing and the first sunshine warmth has ramped up the springtime, approaching summer surf frenzy. So without a break to find time to exaggerate the stories of my travels, I was back in the spray-bay making surfboards colourful before they are finished and can find an ocean.

So they keep on coming, unsurprisingly we have been doing a good amount of the Pyzel ‘Red Tiger’ model, with many having the red and yellow John John spray. I’ll get some pics, the shots above were taken late in the day, when my main intention was to evacuate the dust & fume bowl. Again, rather amateurishly, I made a couple of reels of work at the Ocean Magic surfboard factory on my sleeplessink.blogspot.com site.

A quick cycle around town.

Between work chewing into my daylight hours I took a couple of cycle rides around Newquay to have a look around. Unsurprisingly I found my way to the harbour and got photos of rope – it’s good to be back! Spring is showing itself and I saw the first buckets and spades out on display and getting ready to dig some sand.

I also saw a stag party spilling in and messily out of Wetherspoons…here we go, here we go, here we go!
